Easy to make manipulatives will be shown and demonstrated for teaching counting, operations, place value, time and fractions. Many commercial manipulatives are just too expensive for teachers to acquire and sometimes actually don't exist for some math topics. New teachers especially have not yet acquired a large collection of tools for aiding instruction. The solution is to make these needed manipulatives with easy to make instructions and inexpensive or free materials. After the "formal" presentation and as time permits the participants will be able to construct some of these manipulatives with materials provided. In addition, the participants will be given the rationale for using the manipulatives with regard to readiness and developmental levels as outlined by Piaget and others. Frequently this session has been attended by student teachers who actually have stayed after the session is over in order to construct the manipulatives with materials provided. It is a great way for student teachers to start building their arsenal of materials for teaching math.
